Platja d’Aro – Midsummer night music
Classical, jazz, rock, rumba, sardanes or habaneras make for the busiest musical summer on the Costa Brava, with 60 concerts and musical events in just four months, from 13 June until 11 October, under the umbrella of six festivals. Most of them are staged on the streets, in the squares or on the beach so that the audience can experience every note, chord or tone with maximum intensity under the stars of a summer night.
All the elegance of jazz, gospel and blues will join together in the opening concert by Luke Winslow King from New Orleans (on Saturday 13 June). The Xalaro Festival of tourism and family shows combines acts, circus performances and music along the promenade of Platja d’Aro for a whole weekend (20 and 21 June) with a fair selling the latest products, services and holiday offers for families in Plaça d’Europa (www.xalaro.com).
The 18th Jazz Nights of Platja d’Aro offer eight free outdoor concerts, every Friday from 10 July to 28 August, with an eclectic programme concentrating on the main jazz bands on the Catalan scene but open to international artists too; it also includes complementary musical styles on the borderline – gospel, swing, soul, blues and musicals
(www.nitsdejazz.com).
The International Music Festival of S’Agaró is also celebrating its 18th anniversary, with nine performances between 18 July and 11 October at the Nostra Senyora de l’Esperança church. This is one of the biggest classical music events in the country, lending continuity to the historic and oldest festival on the Costa Brava, Senya Blanca.

The local festivities of Platja d’Aro (from 13 to 16 August) and Castell d’Aro (from 8 to 12 September) bring together the most varied, vibrant and vigorous musical styles for all audiences. The programme is completed by guitar concerts, sardana performances and habaneras all summer long. Finally, the Desemboca festival (from 20 to 23 May: www.desemboca.com) offers mainly rock ’n’ roll, rhythm ’n’ blues and soul, while FestiSurf Costa Brava is dedicated exclusively to surf-rock (12 September: www.festisurfcostabrava.com).
