FIMG
Innovation and heritage
In recent years the city of Girona has been enjoying a cultural boom that has heralded one of its brightest spells. Under the umbrella of the “Girona Ciutat de Festivals” (“Girona City of Festivals”) brand, the traditional seasons such as Temporada Alta or the Black Music Festival have been joined by new festivals focusing on modernity and the avant-garde. One of them is the Girona International Mapping Festival (FIMG) celebrated between 30 July and 2 August.
Mapping is an audiovisual technique which uses monuments as a giant 3D projection screen. Videos are tailored to the place where they will be displayed, fitting in with the architecture and the relief of the building. Mapping is usually accompanied by sound or music to make the sequence projected even more spectacular. The end-result is a mixture of reality and fiction that leaves no spectator indifferent.
The Girona International Mapping Festival was born in 2014 with the aim of paving the way for 3D projections which were in their infancy. The city is a perfect place to try out mapping as it has architecture unique in Europe, which allows a perfect combination between innovation and heritage.
The festival consists of two parts. The first is a competition in which various international artists project their creations on the most emblematic buildings in the city, while the second is an international congress, which provides a forum for dialogue and exchanges of ideas between professionals from this industry.
The competition includes projections onto the façade of the city hall, that of Casa Pastors, the court house, the Pont d’en Gómez and Les Àligues buildings. The jury will judge the originality, innovation, visual and musical style, and the logistics of the creation and the link with the building. As a novelty, the 2015 FIMG will focus on a theme: contradictions.
The aim of the FIMG is to open up audiovisual arts and contemporary creation against the background of first-class monuments and architecture. A good parallel to what Girona is, a historic yet avant-garde city.
