Emma and Marc Bournazeau lead a winemaking dream within D.O. Empordà

Terra Remota is a cellar located on an estate nestling in the Albera hills. Its history started in 1999 when the Bournazeau Florensa family bought 40 hectares of land between Capmany and Sant Climent Sescebes, 15 km from the Mediterranean Sea and in the middle of a forest, 140 metres above sea level. It is located in a granite zone, perfect for winemaking since the soil is not fertile, which ensures good drainage. A solitary, captivating place which seems isolated from the rest of the world, hence the name “Terra Remota”.

The cellar was designed to blend in with the surroundings and the environment, yet incorporate all the technical facilities needed along with a contemporary design. The building is tailored to the slope of a hill and its roofs are covered with vegetation.

Inside, the cellar has the most modern production facilities, based on the principle of gravity. The harvest enters through the highest part of the cellar and the processes follow each other without needing to use drive pumps, which could damage the grapes.

One of the owners’ wishes is to show visitors how the whole cellar works and every step in wine-making.

The guiding criteria governing organization of the cellar can be summed up as three concepts: quality, respect for the raw materials and identity. The philosophy of the cellar is to provide a customized service for each of its wines.

The features of the land in which Terra Remota is located, combined with the professional experience of the owners, give the wines their personality, giving priority to softness and elegance and avoiding excessive tenacity and body.

The names of the main range of Terra Remota wines are based on the concept of “Camino” (road), a clear reference to the poem by Antonio Machado. As in the poem, the philosophy behind this cellar is that respect, tenacity and perseverance are essential to achieve the goals set.
